Sen. Tom Coburn on Greta van Susteren's On the Record (video)

Former Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn appeared on Greta van Susteren's On the Record last night to discuss the dysfunction in Washington and how we can fix it.

Greta began the interview with a question: How can our leaders in Congress support so much waste and fraud?

Coburn, who served 16 years in the U.S. House and Senate, said they don't support it, per se, but they have an incentive to ignore it.

"You're not [for waste and fraud], you're just protecting what benefits your next election cycle...every bit of this waste has a constituency."

"That's why," he continued, "our Founders, in their wisdom, gave us a constitutional way to address this. It's an Article V Convention of States."

The purpose of a Convention of States, Coburn said, is simple.

"We realign what was intended to be the relationship between the states and the federal government. We limit the scope and jurisdiction of the power of the federal government."

In conclusion, Coburn had this warning for our elected leaders:

"The rule of the rulers instead of the rule of law, that's how all other republics have failed. And what we ought to be about is restoring that [rule of law]."
