The latest evidence that the GOP-controlled Congress has no intention of repealing Obamacare comes from the Senate, where Republicans have added to their “new” legislation a penalty for not having health insurance.
Rather than a monetary penalty, the GOP’s plan would disallow someone from purchasing health insurance for six months if they’ve gone without insurance for 63 days.
Why? No one quite knows for sure. It could be aimed at propping up failing insurance companies that can’t turn a profit and guarantee coverage to those with pre-existing conditions. Whatever the reason, the GOP’s new plan is looking more and more like what Americans have been struggling with for the last four years.
The problem is simple: the federal government has no business telling Americans whether they can or cannot purchase health insurance. But now that the feds have a foot in the door, they won’t give it up without a fight.
Fortunately, a fight is exactly what the American people are working to bring. Millions across the country have voiced their support for the Convention of States Project, a nonprofit grassroots effort aimed at calling the first-ever Article V Amendments Convention.
At an Amendments Convention, delegates can propose constitutional amendments that effectively limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government. These amendments can ensure we never experience the Obamacare debacle -- or its replacement -- ever again.
