It’s the beginning of December, which means millions of Americans are gearing up for the holidays. But Christmas isn’t the only exciting event happening in the next few weeks, and hundreds of thousands of Americans are getting ready.
State legislatures will be convening in a little over a month. They’ll discuss budgets and taxes and road work, but over 39 states will also consider a resolution that could change our country forever.
This resolution calls for a Convention of States under Article V of the Constitution. A Convention of States can propose constitutional amendments that impose fiscal restraints on Congress, mandate term limits for federal officials, and limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government. Under Article V, 34 state legislatures must pass a resolution that calls for such a Convention before one can be held.
The Convention of States Project has already pre-filed this resolution in several state legislatures, and our state teams plan to work to pass the resolution in at least 39. Eight states have already passed the Convention of States resolution, which means this year could see the necessary 34 states call for the first-ever Article V Convention of States.
Christmas may be coming soon, but the real excitement will begin this January as state governments look to fix the problems plaguing our nation’s capital.
