Rep. Chip Roy's visit with COS at Home

Published in Blog on March 07, 2024 by Matt May

The eventful March 6 edition of "COS at Home" featured U.S. representative Chip Roy from Texas and included an exciting mailbag contest announcement.

Rep. Roy discussed his longtime support for activating Article V with COS regional director and political liaison Jonathan Viaud.

He addressed common objections and myths about an Article V convention -- particularly the "runaway convention" meme that is a favorite of opponents -- and some of the frustrations of being a principled supporter of limited government and fiscal restraint while knee-deep in the swamp of Washington, D.C.

To those who object to even the prospect of an Article V convention for unfounded fears of shredding the Constitution, Rep. Roy alluded to the difficulty of getting three-quarters of the states to ratify any proposed amendments that a convention would submit to the states and said:

"The argument is really simple...If whatever we would agree to, if whatever occurred in a convention of states were going to be so bad that we can't stop it with 13 states to reject it when it comes to the adoption of needing to get to three-quarters of the states, well then we're done anyway."

He amplified his point by referring to the national debt and the mess that is the federal government -- and the need for the people to reclaim government -- by quoting a memorable line from the film Christmas Vacation: "How can it get any worse?"

Rep. Roy also talked about the importance of self-governance, particularly in the context of discipline in federal spending and his efforts in Congress to establish and maintain restraint.

He was critical of fellow Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives who had just hours earlier voted in favor of a portion of the latest omnibus spending bill that increases federal outlays and piles on debt.

Rep. Roy said "we are killing our own freedom" with such spending. He indicated that an Article V convention that considered amendments regarding a balanced budget and term limits would go a long way toward forcing Congress to instill discipline and change course.

Rep. Roy's observations and comments about issues such as the vacating of the Speaker's chair, the legislative processes of the House, and the necessity of citizen engagement at all levels of government were incisive, witty, and informative. He also recognized and thanked the COS grassroots for its involvement and success.

Following the congressman's appearance, Jonathan announced a fun interactive contest for you -- naming the popular mailbag segment of the program!

Participating is easy. Go to www.conventionofstates.com/mailbag to fill out a survey and submit your creative name for the mailbag.

The contest will be open for one week. The winning contestant will be named during the next edition of "COS at Home" on April 3 at 8:00 ET.

The guest for the April 3 program will be announced soon.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
